What is side-loading an app and how do I do it?

Last Updated: Mar 03, 2013 01:50PM EST
Side-loading an app is the act of installing an app from a source other than an app market. To do this you first have to make sure your device's settings will allow it.

From the home screen, press the menu button.

Click on "Settings" and then "Applications"

In the next window, under Application settings, put a check mark in the box next to "Unknown sources" to allow the installation of non-Market applications.

A warning window will pop up. If you wish to proceed, click "OK"

Now you will be able to side-load apps.

You can side-load apps in several ways, the easiest being through the web browser on your device. Simply search for the app you want to download, find the download link and click on it. When the app has downloaded you will receive a notification that the download is complete. Click on the notification to install the app on your device. Once it is installed you'll be able to find it in your App Drawer (four-square icon on your home screen).
